A RARE & LARGE CHEVALIER HORIZONTAL MICROSCOPE SET

⭕ Offered is a rare, early and large French Chevalier-type horizontal microscope from around 1850. Although unsigned the microscope is identical in construction and size to the Chevalier microscope in The Great Age Of The Microscpe No.214 .

The microscope is supported on a square collar fitted to the top of the French polished mahogany case. This supports the heavy cast crass pillar terminating in a compass joint. The limb is fixed to a short bracket holding the body tube at the top and at the bottom it is pinned to the base of the pillar.

At the back of the square sectioned limb is a rack on which run the pinions for focusing the stage and the mirror. The mirror is quite wide at 80mm on the concave side and 52mm on the plane side. The course focussing to the stage incorporates a fine adjustment in the form of a vertical steel screw (reminiscent of John Cuff) acting on a bracket for the stage plate. The stage dovetails into the bracket and has two fold out arms into which can be slid the stage condenser.

Above the stage is mounted the body tube which can be used as a horizontal microscope when viewing using the 90degree prism. Removing the prism allows the microscope to be used in a more traditional way.

The microscope comes with the following accessories;

An objective with bayonet fitting and 2 button lenses.
An objective with bayonet fitting and 1 button lens.
A low power Eyepiece.
A high power eyepiece with missing lens.
Stage clips.
Stage condenser.
Tweezers.

The microscope is in good cosmetic condition with some wear to the lacquer consummate with age. The mechanics are good as are the optics.

Microscope Height on case - 46cm
case width - 42cm
